Music Monday- Ultimate 70s Playlist
October 31, 2011
When I put on this outfit this past weekend I felt very retro and straight from the 70s which is one of my favorite fashion eras! Maybe it was the hat or little booties..but it seemed appropriate to pair my outfit with a suitable play-list to bring you back to the 70s :)

Q&A with Jody Lee from Agoura High School!
October 28, 2011
She recently participated in a Teen Vogue/Oneill's contest where she designed, produced and marketed a dress and handbag for Oneill's! Talk about a talented young lady! She was picked out of 1000 applicants and was 1 out of 5 chosen for this project.
I just had to do a Q&A on this fabulous student. Jody is driven, smart and has a great head on her shoulders! It's so nice to see her High School provide such great opportunities and classes for those interested in a specific field (and yes my favorite field) :)

Jody and I in the showroom :) |
1) How would you style your favorite Boy Meets Girl® item?
I am absolutely in love with the Sanctuary top! I would style it with a short length brightly colored tank top underneath with a simple pair of shorts. I love how this top looks great buttoned or unbuttoned!
2) What causes and/or organizations do you support?
Because my mother is a victim of breast cancer, I support any breast cancer causes. Such causes include Young Survival Coalition, the American Cancer Society, and the Keep-a-Breast foundation. I also love what the Make-a-Wish foundation does since it is so personal and makes patients' dreams come true!
3) What is your favorite part of high school?
My favorite part of high school is that, unlike elementary or middle school, I can choose my own classes to my liking. At my school (Agoura High School) I have taken four Clothing Construction courses and I am enrolled in a Fashion Design and Merchandising class from my favorite teacher Mrs. Kim Speth, who is seriously the most amazing woman alive. These classes contribute to my passion for fashion! I also took Photography, Chinese, Dance, and Psychology which all really intrigued me and was to my benefit.
4) Favorite all time movie quote?
The first quote that comes into my mind is from Finding Nemo when Dory sings to Marlin to "Just keep swimmin', just keep swimmin'." Not only is it humorous in the way that she says it, but I realize that no matter what obstacles I experience in life, it is important to keep pushing forward and progress, although life may present discouraging occurrences.
Also, I'm on my school's Cross Country team and I find that saying this to myself in my mind while I run helps me a lot. Ironic,no?
5) Favorite thing to do in NYC/or city live in?
Since this past week was my first time ever being in NYC, my favorite thing to do in NYC is just to simply wander around the busiest parts of the city. I love admiring how tall the buildings are; they make me feel tiny and youthful. Within a few subway stops I can view the Rembrandt collection at the Met, take a bite in Little Italy, and visit Alexander Wang's flagship store.
6) If you could live out of the country where would you settle down?
I took a trip to Hong Kong this past summer and like New York City, the streets are filled with hustle and bustle. The city never sleeps. Neon lights illuminate the night. Chinese culture is present at every corner turned at. Adorable clothes are like 80% off what I usually pay for. My whole extended family is there as well so it's nice to be near them.
7) What’s your favorite..
Website? Social Networking: Tumblr and Blogspot. Everything else: Style.com
Book? The Great Gatsby, without a doubt.
Gadget? My iPod touch. I'm addicted to all the apps and stuff, but because I don't have internet access on it 24/7 it limits how often I use it.
Midnight Snack? Pasta pasta pasta. I'll mass cook pasta and just put it in the fridge for the next time I want a snack on pasta which can be at like 3am. I think this is a runner's thing. Or maybe just a weird Jody thing.
Guilty pleasure? Pretty Little Liars and pasta.
8) What’s been your biggest splurge this season?
I'm not one to spend great loads of money on apparel, but if I had to pick it'd probably be a long coat I purchased from H&M.
9) What’s your biggest purchase steal?
I literally just bought three sweaters from some sketchy vintage shop for two bucks each like fifteen minutes ago. I had to dig through the store, but it's so worth it. It's so like-new!

Tips of the Day: When you're first starting your business the do's and don'ts
October 19, 2011
I've always loved the story behind a person's career or how they got started and to tell of how they began (probably why I am obsessed with autobiographies these days). My story began in my college dorm room (actually my home bedroom when I was 6 years old) and officially when I moved to NYC in 1999. I worked out of my first bedroom that I shared with 3 of my college roommates(and best friends) and built a sewing/cutting table/work station in my bedroom. I ran my business between my home and space I built in Union City, NJ and the NYC Garment Center. So much more to tell so you will have to come back and read more :)
But for now...
Here are a couple of tips of the do's and don'ts for those who are just starting their business and need to maximize their (tiny) space!
1.Organize the clutter as best as you can. Working in your bedroom you need to separate work vs. your own space. *see my divider in the picture below*
2. Take breaks. Even if it is just a walk around your block to get a breath of fresh air and as I like to say breathe. You are living and working in the same space. You need a moment of your own time.
3. If you live with roommates. Make sure you Thank them for letting you have a business in your space. My girls were amazing and of course they got rewarded in my creations :) I will be forever grateful for their belief in me.

The best was at the end of the day (which of course was super late!) I could just crash!

Tip of the day for young designers!
October 12, 2011
![]() |
My mom and I at my first trade show! |
-Tips for young designers
1. Be prepared to work like you’ve never worked before.
2. Being a talented designer is not enough. You need to learn how to be an effective marketer, networker, salesperson, service provider, writer, stylist, merchandiser and psychiatrist too.
3. Work with multiple vendors and never stop sourcing potential new ones. It gives you leverage and protects you from catastrophes.
4. Last, but not least... BELIEVE!
I quickly learned the importance of hard work and customer service. There are a lot of amazingly talented people in this world. While you may not always be the most creative, charming or brilliant person in the room, you can be the hardest working and most dedicated -- that is something that is totally within your own control. By working hard, my bosses took notice at my earlier jobs and my employees take notice now. Its leadership by example and I think it fosters loyalty and camaraderie.
A young designers survival kit:
- Sketchpad // Moleskin notebook - to draw, write, or post what inspires you
- Totebag - to carry all these goodies in
- Pens // Pencils - To doodle away with in your sketch place
- Camera - to capture things that inspire you
- Needles and thread - for any last minute touch ups
- Phone charger - you never know when your phone might die
- A pins and needles holder - put your pins and needles somewhere so that they are accessible and not poking you!
- Planner or a phone with a great one - staying organized is super important to me and should be a priority to all aspiring designers.
- Vitamin C - Staying healthy is key to running my brand so these tablets are just one way to stay away from being sick.
- Luna // Protein bar - energy on the go!
- Lipstick - adds a little shine to your smile
- Mints - to spark some fresh breathe before you meet someone

Tips of the Day! Entrepreneurial guidelines 2.0..

Entrepreneurial Guidelines 2.0
![]() |
Me speaking at Fashion140 this year on "Humanizing a brand in the social media space" conquered my fear of speaking! |
Today women are shining so bright as they are changing the business world by leading it with a bang. One of these leaders I admire for her determination and changing the way people do things is Arianna Huffington. She is truly an inspiration.
Many women admit that their biggest mistake was not starting sooner - so why not start today! If you have a vision let it be heard. Here are some tips to being a successful woman entrepreneur.
- Embrace the “mother-like” qualities you have and focus on customer service, creating warm feelings and special relationships.
- Be passionate and vocal
- Take advantage of social media - growing my brand I have embraced many social media platforms. But, make sure they are right for you at the right time. There is a strategy behind everything I do(as I say their is meaning behind the madness). Clearly I love Twitter, Facebook, Blogspot, Polyvore and Tumblr but with all I have reason behind what I do with each platform.
- Women at any age can be entrepreneurs!I started my brand at a very young age.
- Always be working to get ahead! Sure its good to be getting by but why not be great?!
I would love to know your tips to success? Share them here!

Stacy
