Behind The Seams: Creating a line

January 29, 2014

Many of you have been asking me about what goes into the building of a collection. It requires hours of preparation and dedication. You have to be ready for all the layers that come into putting it all together. I like to compare it to a big puzzle, or if you know how to use Photoshop, think of it like all the layers and filters you use to put that image together in the best possible way. Below is a little sneak peek of what I've been working on - my BIG puzzle that I'm trying to put together for the back-to-school collection. I am so excited for you all to see it in stores this coming Fall 2014!

Fabrics and tech packs

Visiting my factories and printers on the West Coast

How cool is this entrance to the printers' offices?!?!

Midnight Inspirations: Logo-Mania!

January 27, 2014
A recent WWD article, "They Are Wearing: Paris Men's Fashion Week Fall 2014" really caught my eye. Logos are all the rage once again, this time however its more fashion forward than it was, perhaps, in 2000 and both men and women are driving this movement equally!

My Tips: How to update your manicure!

January 24, 2014

I love a good manicure, but unfortunately after a few weeks, what was once beautiful now looks chipped and grown out! But never fear I have a few simple tips for touching up your manicure and making it last a few weeks longer! Fist thing is to touch up those ends. If you have the same color, just brush over the chipped ends and make sure it blends into the original color. If you don't have the original color you can make a french tip on the end or do what we're going to do to the nail bed and you can also just trim them down as I did below! So now for that growth area! Take a nail polish color that compliments your current mani and brush out (see below).
All you need to get this look:
1. gold nail polish
2. a fine tip applier, I like this one from Sephora here
3. And great outfit & accessories to go with the feeling: shirt & rings

How do you like this tip?

Behind the Seams: Q&A with Syl Tang, Founder of HipGuide.com

January 20, 2014
Syl Tang is a “futurist” and the founder of HipGuide. Launched way back in 1999 (which was in the Paleozoic Era, if I’m not mistaken), the HipGuide set out to serve as an editorial source for both travel and fashion. Today, the HipGuide continues to thrive and Syl also acts as a consultant for well-known beauty, beverage and automotive brands.  She also contributes editorial content to a number of publications including the Financial Times and The Hollywood Reporter . The story about how I met Syl is pretty funny.  Syl was speaking at an event a few years ago where she was labeled as a futurist -- the most awesomest job title I’d ever heard of.  Who wouldn’t want an inside track on the future, right?  As a joke, I asked her how she procured that title (“Is there a degree for that?”).  She proceeded to tell me a slew of You Know You’re a Futurist if… jokes.*  Basically, being a futurist is about thinking about “what’s next.”  Syl’s written articles about shoppable video, wearable tech and a million other things we’re only just beginning to hear about in the mainstream. Frankly, she’s fascinating… and sassy… and hilarious and I’m glad to call her a friend.  Last March, Syl and I, being the social butterflies that we are,  attended three events together back-to-back (you can see post 12when you click on the #s). It was a blast.  Now, I’d like to take you Behind the Seams™  with us on another adventure, learning what makes Syl tick! Read more below!  WHERE?

*One of them was, You know you’re a futurist when you use a worm hole to commute. Ha!

Here are a few more of Syl's answers from our interview that I thought you would enjoy!

what causes and/or organizations do you support?
I support Planned Parenthood because they are about an aspect of basic women's health, having regular checkups and preventative birth control. To me it's about making smart choices up front to protect yourself. I feel as women, we should have the opportunity to plan our lives, destiny and finances. I also support my parents charity, the Fraternite Fund, which provides for orphans in poor areas of China.

what have you learned about the work force that you didn't know in college?
How much space do we have on the internet? So much! And I am still learning each and every day. I would say the most important thing is resilience. You will fall down! And you just have to keep getting back up. As an entrepreneur, it's an always evolving process how to sell your product, and finding new ways to market that, explain who you are, find clients, fill gaps in the marketplace, and reinventing yourself. There's so many curveballs coming your way, and you can't predict them, so you just have to find a certain inner strength to dust yourself off and keep going.

Favorite thing to do in NYC/or city live in?
I love to eat, so one of my favourite things to do is walk around NY starting in one neighbourhood and just nibble my way through the city and the day, a bialy here, pierogies there, maybe find the best $1 pizza/hot dog/whatever, take the free ferry to the Fairway for the lobster rolls, have a cocktail overlooking the water at the Watermark bar, end up at MoMA and then the Modern in the evening.

What is your proudest career moment?
Has it happened yet? :)  I am proud of the fact that I am part of a DVD that's taught in universities the world over. I'm a case study in universities everywhere from Purdue to Nova Scotia to Dubai, which means maybe other entrepreneurs can skip over mistakes I've made or feel inspired to try to do their own thing.

Midnight Inspirations: Book Review: You Knew Me When, by Emily Liebert

January 14, 2014

Over the Christmas holiday, I finally got to read You Knew Me When, Emily Liebert’s hotly anticipated follow-up to Facebook Fairytales.  I tend to save books for when I go on vacation, because there is nothing better on god’s green earth than sitting in the sun, sipping a pina colada, and just READING… from sunrise to sunset. It is a feeling of pure relaxation, especially when your book is a page turner that you just can’t put down. And this was indeed the case with Emily’s latest.
Ohhh, and if you’re wondering why I have a picture of the Zoya® nail polish trio above, it’s because Emily is a woman after my own heart.  Emily is not just a tremendous writer, but also an outside-the-box thinker and businesswoman too.  She did something neat to help promote the book; she partnered up with Zoya to offer this exclusive nail polish with colors inspired by three of the characters in the book -- Luella Hancock, Laney Marten and Katherine Hill.  The trio set is sold exclusively on Zoya’s website.   Love it.  After reading the book and getting to know the characters, can you guess which shade is my favorite?

I don’t want to tell you too much about the book, but here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:

1.      Describing Katherine: “She probably wears tight acid-washed jeans and tortoiseshell sunglasses.” (page 42)
2.      Describing Luella: "Luella had been one of a kind, no doubt about it. She was the sort of person you could never truly appreciate in the moment, but years later, once she was gone, you wished you'd paid better attention, soaked in a little more of her...je ne sais quoi." (page 203)
3.      Telling detail about Katherine: “Drakkar Noir ....It's become an aphrodisiac for me, which can be dangerous, considering it's one of the most popular colognes on the market." (page 241)
4.      About Laney and Kitty: "Laney had very carefully and creatively replaced the word ‘vodka’ with ‘best friends’, so it read, "Absolut Best Friends." (page 156)
5.      Luella's note: "My final wish is that you'll each find true happiness in your lives separately and together. Every woman needs a best friend or a sister." (page 308)

**Note: My favorite quote was on Page 161, but if I give it to you, I will spoil one of my favorite moments of the book so just remember when you get to this page to let me know you felt the same way!**

Midnight Inspiration: Documentary-Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's

January 10, 2014

Designer Issac Mizrahi on the importance of being stocked at Bergdorf's
"If your clothes are not at that place there's no future. There's no future for those clothes. Sorry."
Bergdorf Goodman has a special place in my heart.  It was the first department store to carry my line and it basically put us on the map!  Issac Mizarahi’s quote about the importance of being stocked in Bergdrof's is from the documentary Scatter My Ashes (available on Netflix), which is well worth watching for the young fashionistas among us. Issac's quote might be a little harsh but I am honored to have been a featured designer at Bergdrof's. During my first trade show, my sales rep (aka, my mom)
worked with me before I hired a "professional" sales rep. It was at this show that we met Tracey (my buyer) from Bergdorf's.  I remember my mother nudging me really hard as I was working on the booth décor. The nudge got me talking about the line to Tracey as she entered the booth. Thanks for the push mom! And as they say the rest is History!

Scatter My Ashes really touched me, as I have a personal connection being a designer featured in the store, and probably because I also have a unhealthy addiction to the iconic store, having spent many a Sunday shopping the 5th Floor. For those of you who have never been to New York or Bergdorf Goodman, I suggest watching the documentary.  Learn about the creation of the most amazing Christmas windows in all the land.  Listen to the story of the indefatigable personal shopper, Betty Halbreich, who has been working at Bergdorf's since 1976.  Hear the firsthand accounts of the many designers and fashion insiders who praise the institution and its rich history.  Then make the pilgrimage for yourself… I dare you not to burn a hole in the credit card!

Midnight Inspirations: Pantone's 2014 Color, Radiant Orchid

January 9, 2014
I can't believe we're already 2 weeks into 2014! I can already tell it's going to be an amazing year! One of my favorite parts of starting a new year is that Pantone releases it's color of the year! Last year was Emerald and for 2014 the big color is...drum roll....Radiant Orchid! I love this choice. It's fresh, flirty, fun and falls under the purple family (my favorite color) and who doesn't love Orchids?!

"Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination. It is an expressive, creative and embracing purple—one that draws you in with its beguiling charm. A captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid emanates great joy, love and health". -Pantone

Over the course of the year you are going to see this color everywhere! Here is some makeup, nail polish, dresses, bags and tees you can buy now that come in this hue so you can start rocking the trend now!

What do you think of the 2014 color?

Midnight Inspirations: Meet our January Muse of the Month!

January 8, 2014
Introducing our January ‘14 Muse of the Month, Christine!
I met Christine last year when putting together the Boy Meets Girl® x Roman Luxe jewelry collection.  If you missed the post on this collaboration check it out here. Christine is a Merchandiser Assistant at Roman Luxe/Roman Sunstone. She has incredible energy and such a positive vibe. We connected right away. I also love how fierce she looks in these Boy Meets Girl® tights as seen above! Learn more about Christine below and why we chose her as the  Boy Meets Girl® Muse of the Month!

1. Name: Christine Lohmuller @tineloh on Instagram @clohmuller on twitter

2.  Favorite charity to support and why?
Coming from a West Point background, I have many friends overseas defending the freedoms of the United States. I understand the difficulties that families face when a loved one is gone for months on end and for that reason I support our troops and their families. Each year my boyfriend and I participate in the run down hero highway for which the proceeds support Lead The Way Fund. This is a non profit organization that provides spouses and children of the deceased, disabled, or active duty rangers with health and wellness programs beyond what the government can offer.

3.  Favorite Boy Meets Girl® item and why?
My favorite Boy Meets Girl item is the patterned tights! They are the perfect accessory for the holidays giving a little extra detail to any outfit. I like to pair them with a velvet skater skirt, fur vest, and Boy Meets Girl x Roman Luxe rings for the perfect holiday look.

Who is your muse or the person who inspires you most? Could be anyone! If you would like to be considered for Boy Meets Girl®'s Muse of the Month see the rules here!
