Friday's Prom Finds

April 29, 2011
In honor of the new movie coming out today, Prom and for all those high school students who look forward to their prom in the next couple of months, I wanted to give you a taste of what I wore to my senior prom. I designed and made this dress my senior year of high school(seems like yesterday). Dj Blue Steel shot this picture. Do you believe my dress still fits me! I have continued to wear my Prom dress to many functions since high school. It is a timeless piece inspired by the Roaring 20's (The phrase was meant to emphasize the period's social, artistic, and cultural dynamism).

Now I hand it over to my assistant Michelle/DJ London who went on a prom dress hunt with her sister Emily. Emily has been a great muse and has graced my blog in the past- check her out here :)

It was a beautiful April day in the city as Emily and I headed out early to find the perfect dress for her special night. With a specific design, color palette, and silhouette in mind we hit up the standard department stores which I hoped (and prayed ;)) would have exactly what Emily was looking for. However, things don't always go as planned- you see, Emily wanted a peach or yellow strapless dress. Searching for those colors was a lot harder than I anticipated as well as the type of dress she wanted. Emily is tall, with an athletic build and let's just say, a strapless dress was a no-go. She needed something a bit more secure, with some sort of strap. After conquering Union Square and Soho we were off to Midtown/Times Square!
Funny side note: a couple of weeks ago, Stacy and I were chatting in the elevator about where to shop for a prom dress in the city and this woman who was with us in the elevator says, "I don't mean to intrude but you know where you should look? Lord n' Taylor- my daughter found the perfect prom dress there! Who would have thought?"..and she was right, because that was the next and last store Emily and I visited. I have never really thought to look at Lord n' Taylor, but let me tell you, I was very impressed with their selection- so many different types of dresses and great prices too! If you are shopping under a budget, I highly recommend this store :) After multiple trips back and forth to the dressing room Emily spotted her dress, which was neither yellow, peach or strapless. Instead it was a stunning one-shouldered red dress with beaded detail, under our budget and extremely comfortable!

One thing I learned is that when shopping for a dress for a specific occasion, it's important to not only be comfortable, but to feel confident as well. Happy prom dress shopping everyone!

p.s. What I love about both of our dresses is the length. Interesting X(cannot reveal my age hee hee) years ago and we both were/are rocking a long classic evening gown. Great choice Michelle & Emily. You will be the star of Prom :) Have a blast. Boy Meets Prom Girl xo Stacy

Boy Meets Intern Girls!

April 28, 2011

One of my favorite things about going to work everyday is seeing my 'second family' aka the Boy Meets Girl® Team. I have an amazing group of hard working ladies who are dedicated, loyal and of course fun to be around! Our team has been growing each month and I thought it would be fun to do a Q&A with the interns! It has been a pleasure to work with these young ladies, and I am very excited that they will continue to be a part of the Boy Meets Girl® team in the months to come :)  Thank you all for your hard work. xo Stacy

If you could live in any time period, which would it be? I would live in the 60's because fashion became a huge political movement that time for women, really allowing them to get away for the cookie cutter house wife and become independent, not only that but the music rocked !

I can not leave the house without these 3 items: My ipod, rings, chap stick yo!

Favorite part about working on the Boy Meets Girl® team: I just started, but I love how one office is filled with artistic people who feed off of each other. Everyone puts something to the table, which makes it so rewarding when the project is complete!

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? If I could live anywhere, I would stay in New York City, I'm just a small town Texas girl!

If you could create the perfect music playlist, what would be on it? I have a play list just for BMG:
Sweet thing- Van Morrison
Sleepwalkers- The Hundred in the Hands
Damn it feels good to be
gansta- Geto Boys
Boyfriend-Best Coast
Just a boy- Angus and Julia Stone
When I'm small-

If you could live in any time period, which would it be? Definitely the 1960s.  I am obsessed with Mary Tyler Moore, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and of course, Audrey Hepburn.  I could wear pillbox hats and Chanel 225 bags every day for the rest of my life.  I love that during this time period, women were expected to dress up and look presentable all of the time, even if they were just going to the grocery store.  The music and the movies from this time period are also so great.  (Check out the movies, “Two For The Road” and “The Graduate.”  Both from the 1960s, they’re my all-time favorites!)
I can not leave the house without these 3 items: My Coach day planner that I haven’t spent a day without since seventh grade, my Moleskine notebook, where I jot down all of my random thoughts, and of course my Blackberry!
Favorite part about working on the Boy Meets Girl® team: I have so many favorite things I could say about working on the Boy Meets Girl® team, but the topper on the list would have to be that I am given so much creative freedom.  I love that everyone, including Stacy, asks for my input and are open to ideas I have; whether it be about a product development project or designing the new website.  I don’t feel like just an intern, I really feel like part of a team!
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? If I could live anywhere, I would choose New York City.  After 18 years of wishing and hoping that I would get here one day, I am finally here.  I’ve been here for two years now and I really can’t imagine living anywhere else.  Who wouldn’t want to live in the center of the universe?!
If you could create the perfect music playlist, what would be on it? My ultimate playlist would start out with The Books, some mellow song like “Tokyo,” then I’d add some songs from The Kooks, Lou Reed, The Beatles, LCD Soundsystem, Iron&Wine, and then to mix it up a little I’d finish it off with some Mickey Avalon, Miranda Cosgrove, and Girl Talk!

If you could live in any time period, which would it be? I am a total flower child so if I could live in any decade it would be the late 1960’s - early 1970’s! Music is a huge part of my life so I wish I could have been around during Wood stock – what could be more epic than listening to Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and The Who all at one show? This era also is a huge inspiration to me for fashion as I admire Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Twiggy, Edie Sedgwick, Bianca Jagger, and Brigitte Bardot. I truly couldn’t imagine anything better wearing flow-y maxi dresses, huge bell bottoms, and prints every day!

I can not leave the house without these 3 items: They say a New Yorker brings wears a pair and brings a pair of shoes wherever they go and I could not agree with that more as I don’t leave my house without a pair of platforms with me, my blackberry – literally my life in a technological system, and rings for almost every finger!

Favorite part about working on the Boy Meets Girl® team: Not every intern can rave about where they are working but I truly can’t say one thing I don’t love. Aside from the awesome DJ team I get to work with, a CEO/Creative director who truly cares and inspires me every day, and a boss who I aspire to be like-  it is the positive work environment and the ability to grow and learn from the work I'm doing is definitely my favorite part of being on the Boy Meets Girl® team.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? I am the luckiest girl in the world because I am living in my dream city. New York has been my ideal home for as long as I can remember and being here now is more than a dream come true! I love that I am in the heart of the fashion world, am living in the city that never sleeps, and at the same time can find so much peace at central park or at the coffee houses I frequent.

If you could create the perfect music playlist, what would be on it? Ben Folds, Lykke Li, Passion Pit, Sky Ferreira, Taylor Swift, Brittney Spears, Alanis Morissette and Phish.

Summer Breeze

April 27, 2011
Ice cream cones dripping with sprinkles, the rich smell of sunblock and that bathing suit you bought in the winter because you couldn't wait for the warm weather- this is what pops into my head when I look at these pictures. I am so excited for the warm weather, anybody else?

A picture is worth a thousand words...

To only be 18 years old and create these amazing pieces of art are beyond amazing. I was a photographer in High School and at College at the University of Wisconsin I was a photographer for the Badger Herald (this was before digital shooting so I will have to shoot my work and put it here in time for you to see). When I was introduced to Nirrimi's photography by DJ London(my amazing assistant) I was immediately reminded of childhood memories and my high school/college years, and anything nostalgic. Thank you Nirrimi for reminding me of why it feels good to be a kid at heart.

Nirrimi, I love your work and you truly have a gift. Keep creating and definitely never stop. xo, Stacy

An order to my chaos

April 19, 2011
When someone looks at my calendar for the day, they have this baffled look on their face as if they are trying to solve the world's hardest puzzle. I can relate to this feeling in more ways then one because sometimes my life feels like one giant puzzle with the missing pieces scattered around the city and I end up running out of time trying to search for them. My brand Boy Meets Girl® is my baby and I consider myself a workaholic. This lifestyle has worked to my advantage, but has also been an eye opener.  When someone asks me, "how do you juggle everything and stay so calm?" I must admit, it has been tough to find a healthy balance between work and my personal life, but today I'd like to share with you my 5 tips on how to do just that :)

"We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves" --Buddha

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined." --Henry David Thoreau

"The dream was always running ahead of me. To catch up, to live for a moment in unison, was the miracle." — Anaïs Nin

CONTEST: Boy Meets #Fashion140 Conference Girl- May 4th 2011!

April 12, 2011

Its hard to think of a time when social media wasn't around - when we couldn't write on a friend's Facebook wall, or tweet about the day's events.  Social media, and what it enables me to do from a customer service perspective, has had a huge impact on Boy Meets Girl® and many other brands. How has social media affected your life? Has it been a net positive or negative experience?

I ask, because I have been invited to speak at the Fashion140 Conference on May 4th at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. I already have butterflies thinking about speaking in front of such a huge audience, but I'll be brave (and get past my fear of public speaking) because I have a feeling this will be an incredibly interesting and informative day for everyone involved.  Speakers from all the big boys/girls will be there - Facebook, Twitter, Urban Outfitters, Instyle, PeopeStyleWatch, etc. You can see more details on who is speaking here

The conference is the brainchild of Jeff Pulver (of the 140Conf) and Lilly Berelovich (of Fashion Snoops).  Of course, I would love all of you to attend the conference.  If I could give away some tickets I would... oh wait... I CAN!!

We're running a contest which begins today and ends on April 27th.  Check out the rules below:

In order to enter to win TWO tickets to the Fashion140 Conference you must:
1. Like Boy Meets Girl® on Facebook here
2. Comment on Boy Meets Girl®'s wall and post why YOU would like to attend Fashion140!

4. The Boy Meets Girl® team will contact the winner via Facebook message in order to receive the tickets.
*Please note, transportation is not included and there is no cash value associated with this winning tickets.

Boy Meets Girl Meets Vince Smith Hair Experience

April 11, 2011

DJ Blue Steel and I heading downtown to the Vince Smith Hair Experience, for a long overdue haircut.

While Tara Smithour UK-based good friend and celebrity hair stylist,  has been jet-setting around the world selling her haircare range and prepping her clients for movies and awards shows, my hair has gotten completely out of control.  Thanks to my friends at Bella PR, we were given the opportunity to visit the uber-talented Vince Smith, proprietor of the salon, the Vince Smith Hair Experience  in Battery Park.  and let me tell you... it was definitely an AMAZING experience!

This is Vince and I before we started on what would be a four-hour journey.  normally, it doesn't take that long but, as you can see, it's not every day someone comes in with A HUGE MISSING CLUMP OF HAIR from the constant blow drying and brushing without using detangler... Yikes! But not to worry, because Vince put together a great regimen for me and set me straight.
1. Vince promising me he won't cut off all of my hair. 2. Vince espousing the virtues of layers 3. Vince convincing me not to be afraid of a little dye in my virgin hair (I finally broke down after all the years). 4. DJ Blue Steel goes from Bradley Cooper in the opening credits of Limitless to the scene where he's making out with Abby Cornish... except I'm Abby Cornish... and we're eating Chinese Food in bed and Watching "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" reruns... F my life (J.K).

Sorry about the lack of volume, I was trying out my new Droid and it failed...
The happiest Boy Meets After Girl ever!

I am so in love with my new look and regimen (and DJ Blue Steel's too).  Thanks again Vince!!

About Vince Smith Hair Experience:
Vince Smith Hair Experience is a Battery Park City trailblazer, having been a fixture in the area since 1990.  In the aftermath of 9/11, Vince Smith hired trauma counselors to visit the salon to help his patrons come to grips with the tragedy.  He also played, and continues to play, an important role in helping small businesses in Lower Manhattan rebuild.   Today, Vince and his team continues their charitable works by donating their time and talent to the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Vince, in particular, by teaching. He conducts an apprentice program in the salon for carefully selected beauty school graduates.

Keep Calm and Carry on your Vision!

April 1, 2011
When the world says "give up", hope whispers "try it one more time"-Anon
If you have a vision you must believe in the vision. After seeing Bill Cunningham's documentary this week I   needed a moment to take it all in and write for you what I found so amazing about Bill. Bill Cunningham left his job at WWD when he was younger because what he visioned for the layout of his spread on street style was changed in content. He was so upset that his vision was altered from what he wanted voiced from his pictures. The day he left he began what is now his successful journey on shooting street style in his vision. He kept to his vision and never went back on his point of view. In the course of my journey in building my brand from scratch there have been many ups and downs. A lot of people wanting xyz from me or wanting me to change my vision. But, what I will never do is change my vision or where I see the brand I built from scratch grow to be. The VISION IS CLEAR and I AM EXCITED FOR YOU ALL TO SEE IT SOON ON WWW.BOYMEETSGIRLUSA.COM NEW E-COMMERCE SITE!
By the way the attached picture was from an event I did at SAKS in NYC in 2005..they made the Boy Meets Girl(R) logo look like a basketball court logo'd floor. It was dreamy then and is dreamy still today for me!
So thank you Bill Cunningham for reminding of me of why I am doing what I do and to always BELIEVE in your VISION.
