Behind the Seams: Q&A with Leah Labelle

May 29, 2012
Happy Tuesday. I hope everyone had a fantastic Memorial Day Weekend. As you know I love meeting and working with new incredible talent. A few weeks ago, I was lucky to have Leah Labelle visit me at our Boy Meets Girl® office. If you've never listened to Leah's music, check out her new HOT video for her single "Sexify" here on MTV. During our meeting I asked Leah what her favorite part of her job was? She said, "meeting people from all different walks of life and learning about their experiences, sharing, and trying to make a difference."  I couldn't agree more with this answer.  I was thrilled to be able to sit and chat with Leah more in depth, learning all about her career, sharing some stories about our journey's, and talking about how we can make a difference in the world. Of course Leah got a DJ name when she was here (always a must!) as we both have a love for Coco Chanel...DJ Coco! It was such a pleasure having you here Leah and connecting on so many levels. I loved styling you in Boy Meets Girl(R) which was not hard as you are so Boy Meets Girl! Looking forward to working with you in the future and watching you rise.

what I wore: drip tee around the world

May 25, 2012
My grandfather on my mom's side (who is no longer with us) started a tradition that all my family members (cousins/aunts/uncles/sisters/parents) wherever they may be in the world would meet in a central place for the passover holiday. So this year 20+ of us met in Orlando, Florida for Passover. A beautiful tradition I cherish more and more as I get older. While I was away something came over me and I was determined to make sure I took a picture in my Boy Meets Girl(R) Drip tee around the world at Epcot! Let's just say my sister, mom and cousin were excited for this challenge but my boy cousins were not loving me at each stop. They wanted more rides and I wanted a taste of Paris :) So each shot was a fast take but thanks to my sister, mom and cousin Naomi we captured the drip tee around the world. Hope you Enjoy!

Scoop up this Boy Meets Girl (R) Drip Tee to rock around the world this Memorial Day available now on!

Behind the Seams: Q&A with Lindsey Calla of

May 18, 2012
Happy Friday! I am so excited to bring you my new Behind The Seams™ with Stacy Igel layout. My blog is always evolving and I am such a visual person so I thought you would all appreciate the updated layout. What is amazing is today I am taking you Behind The Seams™ with my good friend and incredible blogger Lindsey Calla aka Saucy whom I featured on this blog on 06/29/10 here and walked in my NYFW runway show with the Neon Trees here! It is amazing how much Saucy has evolved as well in the past two years. I'm sure you have seen her recently... she is a Maxxinista for TJMaxx and also has a new series with Marie Claire called Fashion Mission on Hello Style here. I'll never forget one of our dinners catching up years ago and talking about this new thing called "Twitter" and how we could use it. Time is truly an amazing thing; it's fast and moves even faster in our space. Thank you Saucy for being part of today's feature. I'm so proud of you!

Midnight Inspirations: In Living Pink Gala 2012

May 17, 2012
Last night was a beautiful night Honoring Genomic Health, Dunnan Edell (CEO, CCA Industries, Inc.) & Lisa J. Frank, YSC Founding Member/President, Board of Directors. The Event Host of the night was Chriss Wragge, CBS News and Jennifer Merschdorf, YSC CEO.  I decided on this post to create a GIF of the night. Thank you sponsors, honorary chairs, benefit chairs and benefit committee and my fellow Boy Meets Girl(R) Dj's for helping make an extraordinary night happen. Being part of the YSC as you all know is truly dear to me and last night was truly amazing to see all the support and how big the gala has gotten.
Words cannot describe the feeling. As Lisa Frank stated in her speech last night "I hope one day we will not need a YSC and we can fight Breast Cancer all together." I pray for this to happen.

Benefit Chair Jean Won, Benefit Committee Me and Kerry Twibell
Also I wanted to thank the following Bloggers below for their help and outreach in spreading the word on this event. With your help we sold the most tickets ever in ILP history. I can't thank you enough!

May 15, 2012
This year I got inspired to create my new trademark invention/look #sportscollars! I started by taking my vintage Chicago Bulls broaches and putting them on my collared shirts (see previous post here). I've also played around with mixing in my other vintage broaches and pins. Check out all my #sportscollars looks here in my Lockerz Collection.

Entrepreneurship: The role of social media in business

May 11, 2012
I'm a technology nerd "nerd chic" and love learning about all the new sites and gadgets, especially when they relate to the things I love like fashion!! It's constantly changing so if your like me I must keep up to speed with the constant evolution of new new new!

Here's a video of me speaking at #Fashion140 last year about some of the the different social media resources I rely on and how they, especially with my blog here, play into my business and my brand; specifically how I use it to speak to all of you guys(my amazing fans/consumers/friends/entrepreneurs) and how I "humanize" my brand in this space!

"My blog is my public journal. It's a way for me to relate to my consumer and let them know what I'm doing, what's going on in my Boy Meets Girl® world, what my interests are, what I'm thinking about, and what's going on all over."

what I wore: Last Weeks Events

May 9, 2012
This past week was a busy one for me! I was lucky enough to attend 2 amazing events! The first was the CNNCTD+100 Launch Party at The New Museum.  I was privileged to get to work with CNNCTD+ launched Sound Graffiti, a new concept that has placed "playbuttons" across NYC educating people on contemporary culture. Roman Grandinetti, the creative director behind Sound Graffiti and CNNCTD+, worked with different local neighborhood curators to create each box. I along with 25+ fashion designers and industry leaders recorded a button talking about the garment district and what it meant to us. This Fashion District button curated by Caravan Stylist Studio for CNNCTD+ was part of the 100 project. You can hear what I said along with YEOHLEE, Rebecca Minkoff, Lisa Smilor of CFDA, Dean Simon Collins of Parsons, Ryan Daly of the Fashion Center and many others! Check the play button out at 1412 Broadway in the plaza in the heart of the Fasion District! Thank you Claudine De Sola of Caravan Stylist Studio for curating a beautiful "playbutton"!

Thank you Micah for always being there capturing my runway shows and events. Loved your rocking orange suit! I also got to catch up with friends Ashley Hebert from the Bachelorette and her fiance JP Rosenbaum. It was great seeing them along with all my other amazing friends!  I told everyone that night I felt we were all in a scene from 90210(that is a good thing ;) I ran into so many of my fav peeps) Such a lovely evening with incredible positive energy!

My tips: Finding the perfect Mothers day gift!

May 7, 2012
Every year around Mother's Day, I get so excited about finding the perfect gift for my mom aka Dj Norma & my amazing mother-in-law Ronnie. For the past couple years, I've gone with new Boy Meets Girl® items. You can see my mom in the picture below rocking the Sanctuary Top over her printed dress.

Dj Daisy Deesh (me) and Dj Norma (mom)
These are the gift ideas I have on this year's list. I'm not sure which one I will choose (as I have to keep it a secret) but wanted to share these suggestions with you, in case you haven't found that perfect gift for your mom or mother-in-law yet!
1. the Boy Meets Girl(R) Voyage Hoodie... this one is definitely at the top of the list this year! Comfortable and lightweight for the Spring and Summer and even into the Fall!

2. Cookies by Design Cookie Bouquet! Instead of getting a bouquet of flowers, you get get a bouquet of flower cookies!! I especially love this one. the bouquets range in pricing and they can do same day delivery!

3.  I am a big scarf lover and so is my mom and my mother-in-law. The selection at of Theodora & Callum scarves are great. This Navajo printed blanket style is also on my list of giving and I might even snag for myself too :) The retail price is $175 but you can save 50% with 500 PTZ on Lockerz. So I am able to get his for $87.50 for doing what I love on Lockerz. Love it!

Have you found a mother's day gift yet?

Behind the Seams: Q&A with Mia Hanekamp from Moda Magazine

May 4, 2012

Mia Hanekamp holding microphone in an adorable dress :)
Happy Friday! Today, I bring you a fellow Chicago & Badger Girl Mia Hanekamp from Moda Magazine. Mia is currently a student at the University of Wisconsin (my Alma Mater) and I had the pleasure of working with her this past April during University of Wisconsin's first College Fashion Week! I graduated a few years ago (lol!) and when I was a student there I also took part in organizing our own student fashion week.
This was before the days of social media (ok yes I am ancient but our secret shhhh)
so I was so excited to work with Mia and Moda's followers to promote #UWFW and #BoyMeetsGirlU with a twitter party for her team and my team here in NYC.

Read more about Mia in her Q&A below:
1) how would you style your favorite Boy Meets Girl® item?
I'd wear the Sanctuary Top in white with the Paramount Pant! It's such a casual chic look that can be worn on so many different types of occasions.
 2) what causes and/or organizations do you support?

 Women's heart health
 3) what is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of Moda is seeing the finished product, whether it's an article I've worked on with one of our writers or the entire UW Fashion Week production. One of the greatest feelings in the world is seeing your hard work pay off.

 4) what have you learned about the work force that you didn’t know in college?
I've learned so much more from my internships and my work with Moda than I have ever learned in college so far. I believe that hands-on, practical work can teach you so much more than sitting in a classroom can. One thing in particular that I've learned is attention to detail. If you make a mistake in school, you might get a few points taken off of your grade. If you make a mistake for your boss, someone's job could be in jeopardy.

 5) what is the hardest part of your job? Highlight one or all that apply!
      a. lack of sleep
      b. long hours/crammed schedule
      c.  find a good balance between personal life and work

All of the above! But for me, it's all worth it. And with Moda, the people I work with are some of my closest friends. Planning UW Fashion Week did involve long hours and a crazy-busy schedule, but it was essentially just a big group of friends doing what they love.

6) Favorite all time movie quote?
The opening monologue of Woody Allen's "Manhattan"

7) Favorite thing to do in NYC/or city live in?
My favorite thing to do in New York City is just to walk around outside on a beautiful day. New York City is such a spectacular place, and every time I visit there I love it more and more. Some of my favorite places in the city are on/near West Broadway: a great French restaurant called Felix, my favorite breakfast spot The Cupping Room, the Soho Grand Hotel... I also love the Union Square Greenmarket in the summer, shopping on Mercer Street, and Eataly in Flatiron!
However, I grew up outside of Chicago, a city unlike any other. No matter where I end up settling down, Chicago will always have my heart.

8) If you could live out of the country where would you settle down?

9) What’s your favorite..
Who What Wear, Brunch At Saks
I'm not a big reader, admittedly, aside from the newspaper and magazines. (journalism major problems...)
My iPhone. It's a gadget and an accessory at the same time.
    -guilty pleasure?
Trashy reality shows on Bravo, grilled cheese with lots of butter, and really bad rap songs
    -midnight snack?
Popcorn with olive oil and salt
  10) What’s been your biggest splurge this season?
Nothing yet, but I'm so excited to get some great trendy pieces for the summer. I'm really into neon, peplum, and color blocking, so we'll see where my shopping addiction takes me over the next few weeks.
  11) What’s your biggest purchase steal?
I wore a Thakoon dress from Rent The Runway for the UW Fashion Week runway show. It was a steal because I rented it for 10% of the retail price. Insane. I don't think I had ever been more excited to wear a dress in my whole life. I also got these great camel wedges from Urban Outfitters a week or so ago. Everyone was asking me where I got them, and I was so excited to say that they cost, like, $65.
  12) Social Media: Do you have...

Thank you Mia for being part of today's Behind the Seams™ with me :) It was such a pleasure to learn more about you! Go BADGERS!

My tips: DIY eco-friendly summer scarf with left over fabric

May 3, 2012
Inspired by this scarf my dad bought me in Paris I thought it would be fun to try it on my own. Being environmentally conscious is very important to me and I thought it would be fun to take some old fabric scraps in my office and create my own eco-version of the scarf!

Here is the one my dad got for me (this scarf was hand knit and is a winter wool weight).

1. Measure out how wide you want the strips. I measured 1 1/2 inches for mine.
2. Begin cutting out your strips, following a straight line and cutting to the end of the fabric.
3. To make things easier for myself once I cut my first strip I placed it over my fabric and used that as a template for my other strips.
4. Measure out the length of your strips and determine how long you want each ring to be. My strips ending up being 28 inches and I cut them down to 18 inches. The shorter the strips the smaller the rings and the more you'll have to make.

5. I decided to use two different fabric fleece and cotton/spandex leftovers.
6. Next begin making the chain. First take one strip and tie the ends together. Then take another strip looping it through the original strip and tie ends together. Continue doing this till you get the length you want.
7. Once you've made enough chains with your strips you can either connect the ends together making the scarf one big circle.
8. Voila! You've made an DIY eco-friendly summer scarf!
Play around with patterns, materials, colors, add beads, ribbon, anything you want! Get creative and have fun!

Midnight Inspirations: Meet our May Muse of the Month

May 1, 2012

Introducing our May ‘12 Muse of the Month, Naomi!

See why Naomi is such an inspiration to me and my team.. she just happens to be my cousin so I'm lucky I get to spend lots of time with her :))

1. Name: Naomi

2.  Favorite charity/cause to support and why?
Every week since I was seven I have volunteered in a special needs class at my karate studio (pediatric martial arts). I love working with these amazing and sweet kids. They have the biggest hearts and always make me smile.

3. Favorite Boy Meets Girl® Item?
My favorite Boy Meets Girl® items are this shirt I am wearing Naughty-n-Nice. I wore this on spring break and had fun creating a DIY look with it to wear to the pool. I also love that it gives back to the Young Survivor's Coalition. And I love love the My City Leggings because you can dress them up and down :)
Who is your muse or the person who inspires you most? Could be anyone!
If you would like to be considered for Boy Meets Girl®'s Muse of the Month see rules here.
